The Sydney Morning Herald has named Las Alpujarras as one of the world's most seductive road trip routes.  They say....

"If you plan things properly your hotel room in Granada will have a superb view taking in the Alhambra and the snow capped Sierra Nevada. This is one of the world's most photographed vistas, and the drive through the Alpujarras is no less spectacular. A winding road in the mountains between Granada and the Mediterranean links some 50 villages, and for much of the year the route can take you to snow in the morning and baking hot sand in the afternoon. The remote villages have resisted mass tourism, but now there is a steady influx of northern Europeans making the hidden valleys their home. This was the last stronghold of Spanish Muslims and the architecture is Berber - flat-roofed and box-shaped. Take the road to Motril and pause at the Pass of the Moor's Last Sigh, where the last Muslim king looked back at what he had lost in Granada. You'll see permanent snow on Mulhacen, Spain's highest point at 3481 metres. At Lanjaron you are in the Alpujarras and on your way to Trevelez, the highest village in Europe. It is a stark contrast to travel these claustrophobic valleys, then head south for an hour and find yourself on the superhighway from Malaga to Gibraltar, via all the excesses of the Costa del Sol."
